Last week, I went to view an apartment with a friend of mine. She asked me to come along because she wanted to know what I would notice “through the eyes of a young real estate agent.” I have to admit — this profession has changed me. I no longer just see apartments; I see stories and opportunities.
The very first thing that caught my attention wasn’t the size of the living room or the color of the kitchen cabinets. It was the light — or more precisely, the lack of it. There were three large windows, but the curtains were tightly drawn, and the room was filled with furniture that completely swallowed up the sense of space and airiness.
This is exactly what we do at Ellix — we help prepare homes for sale through thoughtful staging and presentation. It’s about creating a visual experience that helps buyers fall in love with a property at first sight.
Why Is Home Staging So Important Today?
Did you know that buyers form their first impression within just 90 seconds? It’s incredible. And nowadays, that decision is often made even earlier — while scrolling through listings on a phone. If the photos look dull and the apartment feels dark and lifeless, potential buyers simply move on.
Before becoming a real estate agent, I worked in social media marketing, and that experience taught me one important lesson: people buy based on visuals and emotions. Real estate is no exception. A property with strong visual presentation attracts more attention — and ultimately achieves a better selling price.
One thing I only recently learned myself: making a home shine before selling doesn’t mean renovating it. It means highlighting the apartment’s best features.
4 Practical Tips to Make Your Apartment Shine Before Selling
Here are four of my favorite techniques you can start using immediately, to prepare your home for sale:
1. Let the Light In (and Clean the Windows!)
Open the curtains and wash the windows — you wouldn’t believe how much it changes the entire vibe of a room! Light is the cheapest interior design tool there is. For photography, always choose the morning hours, when the light feels softer and fresher. ✨
2. Less Is More — Remove Half Your Things
It may sound intimidating, but too much furniture makes a space feel visually smaller. When rooms are more open, buyers can more easily imagine where they would place their own favorite sofa. We’re creating space — not showcasing storage.
3. A Neutral Base with One Warm Detail
A bright red wall may feel personal and unique to you, but for a buyer, it can become an obstacle. Neutral tones create a clean canvas. However, always add one warm and inviting detail — whether it’s fresh flowers on the table or a soft throw blanket on an armchair. 🤍
4. Photos That Tell a Story
Smartphones are great, but a professional real estate photographer is an investment. I’ve seen the exact same apartment sell significantly faster simply because the photos were taken at the right time of day and from genuinely flattering angles. Those photos are the apartment’s first “date” with a buyer — so let’s make it memorable!
Honestly, About My Own Journey
I didn’t know all of this when I first joined Ellix. At the beginning, I was even a little afraid to tell clients things like, “You know, that wardrobe in the middle of the room might not be the best idea.” But now I see how much these small changes truly help them.
Every apartment teaches me something new. My previous background as a makeup artist and social media specialist gave me the confidence to notice the little details that create the bigger picture. I don’t want to be a “sales machine” — I want to be someone who helps you present your home to the world in its very best light.
